9. Privacy and Attention
     The field of privacy is one in which individual security is a paramount principle. In opposition, the Attention Field is one in which individual prominence is a paramount principle. The measure of privacy is control of exposure. The measure of attention is time.

In my private thoughts, it has come to my attention that there is a symmetry in the opposition of concepts between the Attention Field and the issue of Privacy.

At the fundamental level, Privacy is about controlling who can observe you. It is about being in control of revealing yourself to the world, but in the sense of concealment.

Also at the fundamental level, the Attention Field (i.e. social media) is about observing, peering through the peephole in the fence, communicating outward and connecting with others. It is about being in control of revealing yourself to the world, but in the sense of revelation, of revealing.

The extremely private person is not known. The extreme social media user is known widely.

The ability to control privacy increases with wealth, as wealth gives control of physical space and access to protective services. The ability to participate in social media increases with exposure, is completely absent from physical space, and specifically utilizes non-protective services, that is services designed to help one be revealed in specific ways.

The zone of privacy is one in which data is protected, hidden, controlled. It is one in which the pedigree of data is known and protected. However, the world of the Attention Field is one in which data is displayed, becomes disembodied, is uncontrolled and can be duplicated and reposted and republished endlessly, with or without connection to the source.

The field of privacy is one in which individual security is a paramount principle. In opposition, the Attention Field is one in which individual prominence is a paramount principle. The measure of privacy is control of exposure. The measure of attention is time.

Privacy is a zone of control and restriction. The Attention Field is a zone of freedom and exploration.
